Real Lions Fly into Doncaster Robin Hood Airport.

A pride of lions has been rescued from a run down zoo in Romania, where they faced an uncertain future living in poor conditions, and flown to Doncaster Sheffield Airport by Jet2. to join other animals in natural surroundings at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Believed to be the largest big cat rescue ever, Park Directors initiated a campaign through the charity Wildlife Heritage Foundation to raise £150,000 to save the lions in August after learning of their plight at Oradea Zoo from the organisation SOS Zoo.

The appeal still has £25,000 to raise towards the rescue costs but the Park accelerated their plans to bring the lions to the UK on welfare grounds as the animals’ health was worsening due to winter conditions in their inadequate housing at Oradea. .

Back in February a team of vets flew out to Romania to assess the situation and plan the transfer for the lions. They worked in freezing conditions, tranquilising the lions and moving them into transport crates. The animals ranged in age from 15 months up to 27 years ,and although they were in poor condition, are expected to make a full recovery.

The lions will need a considerable amount of vetinary care, but once they are rehabilitated, they can enjoy the 9 acres of expanse at their new Yorkshire home.

The lions faced a four hour journey by road to Budapest Airport and left Oradea Zoo under a police escort, complete with blue lights and sirens.
